Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique number allotted by Income Tax Department of India. PAN is required for Non-Resident Indians (NRI), Person of Indian Origin (PIO), Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), & Foreign Companies. PAN Card is printed in the form of a laminated tamper proof card.

Format of Permanent Account Number?

India's Permanent Account Number would look like XYZPK8200S. Total of 10 digits/characters with below logic:
  • First three characters i.e. "XYZ" in the above PAN are alphabetic series running from AAA to ZZZ.
  • Fourth character i.e. "P" stands for Individual status of applicant.
  • Fifth character i.e. "K" in the above PAN represents first character of the PAN holder's last name/surname.
  • Next four characters i.e. "8200" in the above PAN are sequential number running from 0001 to 9999.
  • Last character i.e. "S" in the above PAN is an alphabetic check digit.

Why do I need PAN Card?

It is now mandatory for individuals and companies to quote their Permanent Account Number (PAN) on challans for any payments due to Income Tax Department. It is also compulsory to quote PAN in documents on most financial transactions - fixed deposits, property purchase, investing in stocks/shares, engage in business activities, etc.

Difference between NRI PAN Card and normal PAN Card?
